Live Flute Music at Arts Events

One of my favorite things to do is to play live flute music for local arts events, and this fall, I had the pleasure of providing music for three here in central Missouri.

I come ready to play a mix of light classical pieces, interesting world music, and upbeat jazz and pop covers. It’s always a hit!

The first event was the First Friday Art Walk in Hermann, Missouri at the lovely and unique Bar Vin. I settled into the front corner near the bar and played for guests as they strolled by, wandered in, and enjoyed the evening.

The solo flute is such an unexpected surprise to visitors - and I received several compliments and applause as they expressed appreciation for the music. It’s so fun to provide a fun and lively atmosphere as folks are enjoying their night out with friends and family.

The second event was another First Friday Art Walk at Serendipity Art Gallery in Columbia, Missouri. This one is always a little more nuanced, because my flute music provides a backdrop to a beautiful art show.

When guests arrived, they quietly absorbed the art with my music floating in the background. Some people did talk a bit as they sat at tables and enjoyed a drink, but mostly the mood was quiet and somber as patrons took in the full experience of the art and music.

Little children danced and clapped, adults came up to tell me how much they enjoyed the live music, and others dropped generous tips in my jar if I was in the middle of playing a piece and unable to chat.

I always have a general idea of the music I will play for the two hour set, but one of my favorite things to do on the spot, is to feel the energy in the room and select music that will pair well.

  • If guests are lively and laughing, I might pull out a light classical piece, a jazz tune, or a pop cover.

  • If the mood is more contemplative, I’ll play a meditative chant or music from an ancient culture. It’s a creative process similar to that of a DJ, and I love it.

The third arts event I played music for was the Falling for Quilts Expo in Jefferson City, Missouri. This one is presented by the JC Parks Department and the Missouri River Quilt Guild. This was the second time they booked me to play for this event - and it was just as lovely as I remembered!

I played for guests as they perused hundreds of gorgeously intricate quilts hanging all around the room - and enjoyed their reactions and conversations as they strolled by.

I heard several comments on how much people enjoyed the variety of music: everything from Mozart and Bach to Gershwin and Frank Sinatra - and even a bit of Taylor Swift thrown in for fun.

It’s such an honor to curate an enjoyable musical experience for these arts events - and I look forward to many more in the future!

Are you looking for a unique live music option for your upcoming arts event? I’d love to work together to create a memorable experience for your guests.
