What is a Flute Journey Concert? I’m So Glad You Asked.

Are you someone who enjoys the arts and nature?

What about music and story telling?

If you’re answer is yes, you’ll love my newest creation… the Nature Music Flute Journey concert!

Flute Journey is a multimedia concert experience that combines solo flute music with engaging stories and beautiful footage of my outdoor adventures. Kind of like a musical soundtrack to all my favorite hiking, kayaking, backpacking and biking trips, only you get to come along with me!

In my years as a professional musician and educator, I’ve always loved being in the outdoors. Hiking and kayaking… biking and backpacking… and then writing about my experiences in an online adventure blog when I’d return home.

Recently, though, I’ve realized how much music inspiration I get when I’m in nature.

It’s so amazing when I’m hiking through the woods or kayaking down a stream and a flute piece I’m working on will suddenly come to life in my surroundings. It gives a new meaning to the music - and when I return to the practice room or stage, I can feel the music return to life with the memory of my time outdoors.

As an answer to this inspiration, I've curated a concert of casual solo flute pieces that remind me of places I’ve been, trails I’ve hiked, rivers I’ve kayaked, and views I’ve taken in. As I introduce each piece, I tell the story of my experience there and show the great pictures I captured along the way. Then, as I play the music, the audience is invited to take it in as their own.

My hope is to share the joy of my experience in the outdoors, and that in addition to enjoying the music, you will be inspired to get outside and find as much natural beauty as you can.

I’ve been so excited to share Flute Journey with audiences, and each time I do, I’m blown away by how engaged and excited everyone is to experience music and nature in this unique way.

At my most recent Flute Journey experience at the Runge Conservation Nature Center here in Missouri, I loved hearing the ooh’s and ahh’s as I shared my nature stories and pictures - and the heartfelt applause when I concluded each piece of music.

Several people stopped me afterward to tell me how touched they were by the whole experience and were eager to share their own adventure stories with me.

I even had a request from a couple who live near the ocean - to add some beach-themed music to my program. I can’t wait to start working on that one!

The people who have attended my Flute Journey concert come from a wide range of life stages and interests, and the draw for each person is different:

  • Some attendees love nature but don’t have the ability to get out as much as they’d like. Maybe they have young children, busy jobs, or a limiting physical condition.

  • Some avid adventurers who enjoy listening to live music don’t always feel comfortable in formal classical music settings or loud rock concerts.

  • Or maybe - and this one is a biggie - the weather isn’t optimal for being in the outdoors. This can be a huge deterrent to so many people… including me, at times!

Whatever the reason, Flute Journey experiences provide a low-risk, easily accessible way to enjoy nature and music. And, at just under an hour, the program is digestible for even the youngest attendees!
